Book Review: Bitemarks by Drew Cross

A spate of vicious attacks on working girls – A crazed monster who rips his victims’ flesh – A cop with dark secrets for whom blood is more than in his veins.

Young cop, Shane Marks is good at his job. He is also a damaged human being.

When a series of attacks of escalating violence start up right on his doorstep and the investigative spotlight threatens to shine into the murky corners of his world, he is faced with a choice – stop this man by any means necessary, or let his carefully constructed façade unravel and see the ghosts of his dark past dragged out for all to see.

But Shane is a dangerous man himself, with a greater understanding of the nature of the one that they all seek, and no intention of seeing his personal demons exposed.

Blood, lust and bloodlust collide as he desperately tries to stay one step ahead of his colleagues and get one step closer to his quarry, right up until the shocking finale …

* * *

When you start Bitemarks, you think that you’re reading a Crime Thriller; there’s a fanatic on the loose, savaging Prostitutes and a pair of flaw-filled police men hunting him – all the hallmarks of a classic crime story. There’s the necessary liaison with the tired but beautiful colleague, the run in with the racist, homophobic fellow officers and the fear of a couple of local gangsters.

Once you get about halfway through the story though, it changes, twisting around itself like an ouroboros. The flashbacks to the MC’s past life become a compelling story of their own and you find out why he is so reticent about his own past even to himself.

The author’s descriptions of the various procedures and crime scenes; his knowledge of the inner workings of the British Police Force and the way that he uses emotion in his writing, make the book become more than just a story, you are drawn inside with the characters.

This book is worth far more than the pittance it’s being sold for at the moment. I do hope that the people at CSI / NCIS are listening to this, because this is one writer that could be gold for them!
